At Fairway Eye Center, we pride ourselves on providing the best care for our patients. Many of our patients have insurance benefits. There are two different types of benefits that we accept to help cover your eye care: medical insurance and vision benefit plans. In order to be in compliance with insurance policy, we may be required to make changes in how we bill for your exams. We want to make you aware of how vision benefit plans and medical insurance plans are designed to work and what to expect when you trust us with your eye care.

Vision plan benefits are used for examinations that are routine in nature. This type of exam deals with determining your glasses prescription by doing a refraction. A refraction is the test the doctor does to determine what prescription is needed for your glasses and contact lenses. In these exams our doctors look at the health of the eyes and recommend dilation, but vision benefit plans do not cover the evaluation and treatment of any health issues that are found or have been previously diagnosed. If you come in for an exam and the doctor discovers an eye health problem, this may require the exam to be billed to your medical insurance, or the doctor may have you back for a medical follow-up visit. Beyond the exam and refraction, vision benefit plans often help cover the cost of glasses and contact lenses. Examples of vision benefit plans include VSP, Eyemed, Superior, and Spectera.

Examples of coverage:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)
  • Astigmatism
  • Presbyopia
  • Computer eye strain
  • Lenses
  • Frames
  • Contact lenses

Medical insurance benefits are used for any visits that are medical in nature. A medical exam deals with issues that cannot be fixed with glasses. This includes treatment of any sudden issues that you may have with your eyes such as infections or injuries as well monitoring eye conditions yearly. This means that if you are coming in for your annual exam, and you have previously been diagnosed with a medical eye condition, such as cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration or if you have any health conditions that may affect the eyes such as hypertension or diabetes, we will bill your medical insurance for the exam. If you are being monitored for a medical condition but also have a vision benefit plan, we will still coordinate your benefits with your vision plan for glasses and contact lens coverage. Examples of medical insurance include Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Health Care, Cigna, and Medicare.
